SC dismisses copyright infringement proceedings against Sujoy Ghosh in ‘Kahaani 2’ case

In a major relief to filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh, the Supreme Court of India on Friday quashed criminal proceedings against him in a copyright infringement case related to his 2016 film Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh.

The ruling brings an end to a legal dispute that began in 2018, when a complaint alleged that Ghosh had plagiarised the script. The court delivered its verdict days after reserving judgment on March 10, following arguments on Ghosh’s plea seeking to quash the case.

The case originated from a complaint filed by Umesh Prasad Mehta before a magistrate in Jharkhand. Mehta claimed he had written a script titled Sabak and shared it with Ghosh in 2015 for assistance with copyright registration. He alleged that parts of his work were later used in Kahaani 2, which starred Vidya Balan.

Based on the complaint, a trial court had earlier found a prima facie case under the Copyright Act and issued summons to Ghosh in 2018. The Jharkhand High Court declined to quash the proceedings in 2025, prompting Ghosh to approach the Supreme Court.

The apex court had granted interim relief, staying coercive action and exempting Ghosh from personal appearance during the proceedings. With the latest judgment, the case has now been conclusively closed.

Box Office performance so far

On its 18th day, Chhaava added ₹8.50 crore to its earnings, bringing its total India net collection to ₹467.25 crore. While the film did witness a dip on its third Monday, its overall trajectory remains solid, making it 2025’s first blockbuster.

The film’s stronghold in major metropolitan areas has contributed to its success. On its third Monday, Chhaava recorded an overall occupancy of 12.71%, running across 5732 shows in India. Pune led with the highest occupancy at 24.50% (582 shows), followed by Chennai at 20% (33 shows). Mumbai saw an occupancy of 19% (1143 shows), while Delhi NCR recorded 9.50% (1273 shows). Surat, however, reported the lowest occupancy at 5.75% (410 shows).

Vicky Kaushal starrer Chhaava has been running in the theatres for 14 days now, and it has continued its monumental run. The movie added around Rs. 12 crore to its domestic tally, which has already passed the Rs. 400 crore mark. As per industry tracker, Sacnilk, Chhaava registered impressive occupancy even after two weeks of release. Meanwhile, at the international level, the movie has passed Rs. 500 crore mark, and has established itself as Vicky’s biggest hit till date. The movie is now entering its third weekend of release, poised to top charts once again. It will compete with Craxzy and Superboys of Malegaon, both much smaller films.

Currently, the total domestic collection for Chhaava stands at Rs. 410 crore, which means that it is short of Rs. 100 crore to overtake Ranbir Kapoor starrer Animal.

Animal, released in 2023, ended its global run with over Rs. 900 crore, making it Ranbir’s biggest hit.

Meanwhile, Ranbir and Vicky are currently working together on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War, which shall also feature Alia Bhatt. The film saw a whopping 87 per cent uptick on Saturday, the day after PM Modi’s speech, wherein he praised the historical drama film for its portrayal of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s bravery and valour.

As per industry tracker, Sacnilk, Chhaava witnesses a 54.45 per cent slump on Monday, earning merely Rs. 18.22 crore on Day 11 of its release.

However, it must be noted that this is not the first time that the film has witnessed such a plunge as earlier, on its first Monday, it had dipped by over 50 per cent, only to regain momentum and took over the box office by storm.

The movie is directed by Laxman Utekar, and also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna. It is based on the true life event of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and his fight against the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

Chhaava was made on a budget of Rs. 130 crore and has already earned Rs. 345.07 within 11 days of its release, as per Sacnilk.

Despite the drop on Monday, Chhaava has surpassed other historical releases like Kesari and Tanhaji.

The historical drama, which is based on the life events of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the character played by Vicky, earned Rs. 40 crore on Sunday despite facing competition from India vs Pakistan cricket match.

As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the film’s box office collection on Day 10 stood at Rs. 40 crore (early estimates). It witnessed a strong footfall during the morning (52.19 per cent), afternoon (61.46 per cent), and evening shows (61.86 per cent). However, the occupancy declined for shows at night (43.02 per cent) as audiences tuned in for India vs Pakistan Champions Trophy match. The overall occupancy for Hindi shows were Rs. 54.63 per cent.

The movie entered its second week on a solid note, collecting Rs. 223.5 crore on Friday, followed by Rs. 44 crore on Saturday, and around Rs. 40 crore on Sunday. This took Chhaava’s total collection to Rs. 107.5 crore for the second weekend.

After successfully running for 10 days in theatres, Laxman Utekar’s directorial has amassed a total of Rs. 326.75 crore in India, making it the the career-best film of Vicky, surpassing his previous highest grossing film – Uri: The Surgical Strike.

Looking ahead, Chhaava is expected to enter the Rs. 400 crore club soon. With the Mahashivratri holiday on Wednesday, the film’s collections are likely to receive another boost.

As reported by Koimoi, the film has been made on a budget of Rs. 130 crore, and it has already recouped its costs and surpassed its budget with ease, making it the first major Hindi release of the year to achieve this milestone.

Meanwhile, the movie also maintained a robust overall occupancy rate of 31.62% in the Hindi market. The occupancy rate started at 17.80% for morning shows, and later went on to improve as it reached 27.11% in the afternoon, 34.12% in the evening, and peaking at 47.46% at night.

On the first full day since the arrest of Allu Arjun, his movie Pushpa 2: The Rule has witnessed a bumper day at box office. The action entertainer managed to register a 74% jump in the domestic market and 70% worldwide to bounce back on its second Saturday. It has enabled the movie to cross Rs. 1,200 crore mark.

As of Saturday, after completing 10 days since release, the movie had collected Rs. 1,196 crore worldwide, as per Sacnilk. The movie earned Rs. 86 crore on Saturday, as opposed to Rs. 51 crore on Friday. The surge of 70% comes after the lead actor, Allu Arjun, was arrested by Hyderabad Police in connection to Sandhya Theatre stampede case, where a woman lost her life.

As per Sacnilk, the early trend shows Singham Again grossing Rs. 10.25 crore on Wednesday while Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 had collected Rs. 10.50 crore. This added the total domestic collection of Singham Again up to Rs. 164 crore. In total, the movie has collected Rs. 157 crore according to the figures and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 has grossed Rs. 148.50 crore up to now.

The film received a wonderful start, it grossed Rs. 43 crore on Friday (November 1), 42.5 crore on Saturday and 35.75 crore on Sunday. On the other hand, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 has been steadily rising recently and has also started late night shows.

According to the film trade analyst Taran Adarsh, now the total collection of Stree 2 at domestic box office is ₹583.35 crore nett after its fifth Monday in theatres. The latest film is a horror comedy that consists of the second part of the Stree released in 2018, the director is Amar Kaushik and script is written by Niren Bhatt.

Taran tweeted on Tuesday, “Stree 2 remains at [fifth] Friday levels, though the business saw an upswing that day, thanks to the BOGO (buy one get one) free ticket offer. The rock-steady Monday numbers suggest the film is on track to make HISTORY as the first Hindi film to surpass the ₹600 crore mark. On Sunday, the makers Maddock Films took to social media platforms to share an update on the latest box office numbers – the film, as per them, now stands at a gross of over ₹500 crore worldwide. Their caption read, “Stree 2 shatters records with a LEGENDARY and HIGHEST ever 2nd Saturday in history! Thank you to everyone for your continued love and support. Book your tickets now…”

The accompanying poster of the film’s star cast said that Stree 2 had grossed ₹505 worldwide after 10 days in theatres – it’s India gross stood at ₹426 crore, while overseas gross was ₹78.5 crore. Makers claim that Stree 2 has added another ₹33 crore nett, taking its box office collection to ₹361 crore nett in India so far.

A report in Sacnilk suggested that Akshay Kumar starrer Khel Khel Mein could only gross Rs 5 crore on its first day of its run. This, actually, is the worst collection out of all the movies that released on Independence Day. Although Vedaa initially absorbed more advance tickets, it had significantly more spot bookings and a better showcasing of the films owing to the versatility factor. However, it is expected that Khel Khel Mein is likely to surge this weekend owing to the positive word of mouth.
