FedEx Corp. has expanded its facility at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, significantly increasing operational capacity and efficiency. The upgraded terminal more than doubles the number of freighter aircraft that can be handled simultaneously, enhancing parcel sorting and cargo flow across the region.
CEO Raj Subramaniam revealed the expansion during a Ford Motor Co. event in Detroit, saying the investment was made “knowing the potential for growth in this region.” The new facility consolidates two older manual sorting centers and one administrative building into a single 300,000-square-foot complex, featuring an automated parcel sorting system capable of processing 12,000 packages per hour.
The upgraded hub includes temperature-controlled storage for pharmaceuticals and perishables, with parking for seven widebody aircraft—up from three at the previous site. FedEx said the new setup has improved turnaround times and reliability while optimizing overall cargo movement.
The company did not disclose the total investment amount but noted that the Detroit expansion aligns with its strategy of targeted infrastructure spending, following new developments at Istanbul International Airport and plans for an air hub in Saudi Arabia.
