Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been awarded a significant supply order by the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) of the Indian Army for the overhaul, upgrade, and obsolescence management of the indigenous Pinaka Multi-Rocket Launcher Systems. This development marks a major milestone in the lifecycle management of frontline artillery systems developed and deployed under India’s self-reliance drive.
The collaboration represents a rare and strategic partnership between a domestic private original equipment manufacturer and the Indian Army for the sustained support of in-service artillery platforms. It is aimed at ensuring long-term operational availability and systematic modernisation of Pinaka regiments currently deployed across the country.
Under the programme, the focus will be on managing obsolete components, upgrading critical sub-systems, and delivering sustained technical support to Army Base Workshops. The initiative is designed to transition the maintenance of Pinaka systems from conventional practices to a structured, lifecycle-based sustenance and upgrade framework, improving reliability and combat readiness.
As part of the execution model, the 510 Army Base Workshop (ABW) of the Corps of EME will carry out the overhaul and upgrade of key electronics and systems, leveraging its extensive in-house domain expertise. L&T, as the original equipment manufacturer, will supply critical spares, support sub-system modernisation, and provide technical and quality oversight throughout the process.
In the initial phase, L&T will jointly undertake a pilot overhaul of the Pinaka Launcher and Battery Command Post in collaboration with 510 ABW. Following the successful completion of this pilot phase, the remaining systems will be overhauled by 510 ABW, with L&T continuing to deliver critical spares, engineering support, and lifecycle assistance.
This public–private partnership is expected to serve as a blueprint for similar lifecycle management and upgrade programmes across other defence platforms. By reinforcing collaboration between industry and the armed forces, the model strengthens India’s defence sustenance capabilities and supports the creation of a future-ready military ecosystem.
