Coal India Limited (CIL) and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly set up a 2×800 MW ultra-supercritical coal-fired thermal power plant in Jharkhand. The proposed facility will be an expansion of the existing Chandrapura Thermal Power Station (CTPS), currently operating at 2×250 MW capacity.
This brownfield project marks a step towards expanding thermal power infrastructure in the region. The MoU, signed on April 21, 2025, in Kolkata, involves an estimated investment of ₹16,500 crore. The venture will be executed through a joint venture company with equal equity participation (50:50) from both entities.
Coal for the power plant will be sourced from nearby coalfields managed by CIL subsidiaries, Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) and Central Coalfields Limited (CCL).
The agreement was signed in the presence of CIL Chairman P.M. Prasad and DVC Chairman S. Suresh Kumar (IAS). The MoU was formally executed by Debasish Nanda, Director (Business Development), CIL, and Swapnendu Kumar Panda, Member (Technical), DVC.
DVC currently operates in the states of West Bengal and Jharkhand and is engaged in power generation, transmission, and distribution.
