Bharti Airtel, one of India’s leading telecommunications providers, has successfully landed the SEA-ME-WE-6 (Southeast Asia-Middle East-West Europe-6) submarine cable in Chennai. This milestone follows the earlier landing of the cable in Mumbai on December 30, 2024. The SEA-ME-WE-6 is a 21,700 Rkm submarine cable system connecting India to Singapore and France (Marseille), crossing Egypt, and significantly enhancing India’s global connectivity.
Airtel’s investment in this cable system will bring an additional 220 TBPs of global capacity to India. The cable will be integrated with Airtel’s data centre arm, Nxtra by Airtel, providing seamless international connectivity for hyperscalers and businesses. Airtel is a key member of the consortium responsible for the SEA-ME-WE-6 cable system and has co-built a private network with four fiber pairs between Singapore, Chennai, and Mumbai.
Sharat Sinha, Director & CEO – Airtel Business, highlighted that the new cable strengthens Airtel’s existing network, which spans 400,000 Rkms across 50 countries, providing improved services to customers and reinforcing Airtel’s commitment to Digital India.
Airtel’s global subsea network includes investments in 34 cables, including major systems like 2Africa, SJC2, and Equiano, further enhancing its network presence across five continents.
