ABB to spin off robotics division into separately listed company by Q2 2026

Global technology group ABB announced plans to spin off its Robotics division into a separately listed company by the second quarter of 2026. The decision, revealed in a press release dated April 17, 2025, is aimed at unlocking value and providing both ABB and its robotics business greater strategic and operational flexibility.

The proposal, subject to shareholder approval at ABB’s Annual General Meeting in 2026, includes the distribution of ABB Robotics shares to existing ABB shareholders as a dividend in-kind.

ABB India Ltd also confirmed the announcement and stated that its board would assess the implications for the Robotics business in India at an appropriate time.

Key Highlights:

  • Planned listing: Q2 2026

  • Revenue of ABB Robotics: $2.3 billion in 2024

  • Operational EBITA margin: 12.1%

  • Employees: Approximately 7,000

  • Global footprint: Regional manufacturing hubs in Europe (Sweden), Asia (China), and the Americas (USA)

  • Software/AI enabled offering: Over 80% of the portfolio

  • Spin-off method: Share distribution to existing ABB shareholders

Peter Voser, Chairman of ABB, said the spin-off would “optimize both companies’ ability to create customer value, grow and attract talent.” ABB CEO Morten Wierod added that the Robotics business has limited synergies with the rest of ABB’s portfolio and would benefit from operating as a pure-play robotics company.

Following the separation, ABB’s Machine Automation division, which currently forms part of the Robotics & Discrete Automation segment, will be integrated into the Process Automation business area from Q1 2026.

ABB Robotics is recognized as a technology leader in intelligent automation, with offerings across autonomous mobile robots, software, AI, and domain-specific applications. The division has consistently delivered double-digit margins since 2019 under ABB’s decentralized operating model.
