Mumbai airport reports 59% rise in passenger traffic in July

The Mumbai International Airport Ltd. is a joint venture between Adani Group and Airports Authority of India.

On August 11, the Mumbai International Airport Ltd. (MIAL) stated that India’s second busiest airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), recorded an increase of 59 per cent in July when compared with the previous month.

Last month, Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. (AAHL), which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Ltd., had acquired MIAL from the GVK Group.

MIAL said in a statement, “CSMIA has played host to approximately 1.1 million passengers over 11,400 plus flights across domestic and international destinations in July 2021.”

Furthermore, MIAL said that among these passengers, the airport observed a capacity of approximately 0.5 million passengers over more than 4,000 flights during the weekends while June had witnessed 0.3 million passengers over 2,700 plus flights during the weekends.

“The gradual opening of offices is complemented with an increase in the flight capacity, which has been the other factor for sequential growth from CSMIA”, it added.

MIAL continued saying that the weekends witnessed the majority of passengers travelling to Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad from the airport’s domestic sector and Doha, Newark and Dubai in the international sector.

A report by ICICI Securities noted, “The reason could be largely attributed to lower fares driven by stimulation. However, it is likely to be tactical as the government restores the fare caps and floors and capacity quotas to protect weaker lines.”
