While responding to a Twitter user, who urged Elon Musk to launch Tesla cars in India as soon as possible, Musk explained on the difficulty to bring Tesla cars in India. The chief expressed that he is facing difficulty in launching the cars in Indian markets as ‘import duties are the highest in the world by far of any large country.’

He further questioned India’s seriousness in meeting the climate goals put forward by the country saying clean energy vehicles are treated the same as petrol and diesel in India.

Elon Musk tweeted, “We want to do so, but import duties are the highest in the world by far of any large country!  Moreover, clean energy vehicles are treated the same as diesel or petrol, which does not seem entirely consistent with the climate goals of India.”

In another tweet Musk expressed that he is hopeful that there will be at least a temporary tariff relief for electric vehicle.

According to Reuters, on July 23 Tesla had written to Indian ministries urging for a reduction in import duties on electric vehicles. Furthermore, it explained that reducing import duties will ‘boost demand and generate revenue for the government.”
