The INS-Imphal was commissioned into the Indian Navy in Mumbai on the 26th of December in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and numerous other dignitaries. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the commissioning of INS- Imphal. Delivered by Mazagon Dock Ltd on October 20, 2023, the ship\u2019s construction and trial period, completed in less than six months, set a record for the shortest duration taken to build any indigenous destroyer. The vessel underwent comprehensive trials, including the successful test-firing of an extended-range Brahmos missile.<\/p>\n
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised INS Imphal as a shining example of \u2018Aatmanirbharta\u2019 (self-reliance) in defence, emphasizing its significance in strengthening India\u2019s maritime power. He noted that India\u2019s growing economic and strategic power has stirred some forces with jealousy and hatred. Measuring 163m in length, 17m in breadth, and with a displacement of 7,400 tonnes, INS Imphal is propelled by four powerful gas turbines. Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar highlighted the ship\u2019s symbolic importance in realizing the vision of self-reliance in defence and the \u2018Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat\u2019 (One India, Great India) initiative. He expressed confidence in the upcoming commissioning of the fourth Project 15B stealth-guided missile destroyer, \u2018Surat,\u2019 in 2024.<\/p>\n
Admiral R Hari Kumar also emphasized the Indian Navy\u2019s proactive measures against piracy and drone attacks, deploying destroyers from Project 15B and 15A classes, along with various aircraft and ships, to counter these threats collaboratively. Before INS Imphal, INS Visakhapatnam and INS Mormugao of the same class were commissioned in 2021 and 2022, respectively.<\/p>\n
