The H-IIA No. 50 launch vehicle will be the last in the H-IIA series, capping off nearly two decades of successful missions in the launch vehicle program.

The core stage, the most critical component of the H-IIA rocket, houses the main engines and propellant required to propel the vehicle into space. Completion of this stage signals that MHI is ready to move forward with the final assembly and testing phases ahead of the rocket’s planned launch. The vehicle is set to carry an undisclosed payload for a mission expected to take place later this year.

The H-IIA launch vehicle program, which began in 2001, has been instrumental in supporting Japan’s space development initiatives. Over the course of 49 previous missions, the H-IIA has demonstrated a strong track record with a success rate of over 97%. Its launches have played a key role in deploying satellites for telecommunications, weather monitoring, and scientific research, as well as fulfilling Japan’s contributions to international space missions.

MHI has been the primary contractor for the H-IIA rocket series, working closely with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The core stage production process involves the integration of complex components, including the LE-7A engine, which provides the main thrust during launch. The successful completion of the core stage for the final H-IIA vehicle highlights MHI’s continued leadership in aerospace manufacturing.

While the H-IIA has been one of Japan’s most reliable and frequently used launch vehicles, it is being phased out in favour of the new H3 launch vehicle, which is expected to be more cost-effective and flexible for future space missions.

The H3 program aims to build on the success of the H-IIA while incorporating newer technologies to meet the demands of both governmental and commercial satellite launches. The final mission of the H-IIA No. 50 launch vehicle will carry significant symbolic value, as it will mark the end of an era for Japan’s space program.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has completed the core stage production for the final H-IIA launch vehicle.
