Odisha marked a peaceful Independence Day this year, with celebrations across the state remaining incident-free, including in areas historically affected by Maoist activity. Director General of Police (DGP) Arun Kumar Sarangi confirmed the absence of any Maoist disturbances during the festivities, attributing this success to intensified security measures and ongoing anti-Maoist operations.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the Maoist-affected areas, there has been no report of any Maoist activity during Independence Day celebrations,\u201d DGP Sarangi stated in a press briefing. He provided an overview of the security situation in the state, particularly focusing on regions where Maoist influence has traditionally been a concern.<\/p>\n
DGP Sarangi noted that a group of Maoists remains active in Odisha, but their operations have been significantly disrupted over the past year. \u201cLast year, the 8th company of CPI Maoists entered Odisha from Chhattisgarh. Initially, they established a presence in certain areas, but over the last seven months, increasing anti-Maoist operations have filled the security vacuum,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He highlighted the success of these operations, mentioning that the activation of intelligence assets has led to key victories against the Maoists. \u201cThree Maoist cadres, including a divisional commander, have been killed in police action, and more than 11 have surrendered. The intensified operations have not only disrupted their activities but have also severely impacted their morale,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
According to the DGP, the Maoists have altered their tactics in response to the heightened security measures. \u201cEarlier, they would move in large groups, but now they have divided themselves into smaller units. This fragmentation, coupled with their declining morale, has made them less effective,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
The Odisha Police, under DGP Sarangi\u2019s leadership, has been praised for its robust approach to tackling the Maoist threat. The state government\u2019s coordinated efforts, alongside improved intelligence and operational strategies, have played a crucial role in maintaining peace and security across Odisha, particularly in areas once considered Maoist strongholds.<\/p>\n
