Bangladesh is reaping benefits from its economic partnership with Russia, particularly through the development of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), according to Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Mantytsky. This project is emblematic of the robust collaboration between the two countries, aimed at enhancing Bangladesh\u2019s infrastructure and energy security.<\/p>\n
In an interview with TASS, Ambassador Mantytsky highlighted that the Rooppur NPP, a major initiative in their energy cooperation, is set to play a pivotal role in bolstering Bangladesh\u2019s energy sector. Once fully operational, the power plant is expected to contribute up to 10% of the country\u2019s electricity needs. This will greatly decrease Bangladesh\u2019s dependence on coal and gas imports, thereby enhancing its energy self-sufficiency.<\/p>\n
Mantytsky emphasized that the construction of the Rooppur NPP has had a positive impact on the local economy. The initiative has generated jobs for around 20,000 workers in Bangladesh. The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is located on the east bank of the Padma River, about 160 kilometres from Dhaka. The building of this Russian-designed Generation III+ power plant commenced in 2021. It features two VVER-1200 reactors, known for their advanced safety features and a lifespan of 60 years, with the potential for an additional 20-year extension. Currently, the construction of both power units is progressing.<\/p>\n
