Russia\u2019s ongoing invasion of Ukraine has exacted a horrific human cost, with 91 media professionals among the thousands of Ukrainian civilians killed since the full-scale war began in February 2022, according to figures released by Kyiv\u2019s Culture Ministry.<\/p>\n
In a statement marking Ukraine\u2019s Journalists\u2019 Day on June 6, acting Culture Minister Rostyslav Karandieiev lamented that Ukraine is losing its people, among them journalists and media workers. He expressed gratitude to those risking their lives to document the war and push back against Russian disinformation.<\/p>\n
Beyond the 91 confirmed deaths, another 30 Ukrainian media employees are being held captive by Russian forces, including journalist Viktoria Roshchyna who disappeared in August 2022 and is believed imprisoned in Russian-occupied areas. Scores more have taken up arms, joining Ukraine\u2019s military after leaving their media roles behind.<\/p>\n
Among the latest victims were Petro Tsurukin, a former TV host; Oleksandr Mashlay, previously editor-in-chief at Pravyi Postup outlet; Alla Pushkarchuk, who worked for outlets like Weekly and Chytomo; and Iryna Tsybukh, a media trainer turned volunteer combat medic killed in Kharkiv just days before her 26th birthday.<\/p>\n
Since Russia\u2019s invasion, journalists have repeatedly been targeted, with media outlets bombed and reporters captured, ensuring the flow of truthful information remains imperative yet perilous. Ukraine has accused Russian forces of deliberately attacking media infrastructure and killing reporters.<\/p>\n
