Tensions between Russia and the West escalated further as the Kremlin accused the United States of direct involvement in the Ukraine conflict. The accusation came after claims that American-made weapons have already been used in attempted strikes on Russian territory by Ukrainian forces.<\/p>\n

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists that attempts are already being made to strike Russian territory with American-made weapons, stating this more than eloquently demonstrates the degree of involvement of the U.S. in this conflict.<\/p>\n

Peskov\u2019s comments followed reports that U.S. President Joe Biden had authorized Kyiv to use American weapons for cross-border attacks into Russian areas bordering Ukraine\u2019s Kharkiv region. An unnamed U.S. official confirmed the move, aimed at degrading Russian artillery and inflicting heavy damage inside Ukraine.<\/p>\n

However, the Kremlin spokesman said Moscow was not aware of the specifics of Biden\u2019s decision. But the allegations of U.S. arms already being used in strikes on Russian soil prompted the Kremlin\u2019s sharp criticism of Washington\u2019s deepening role.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has pushed for even bolder steps, demanding permission to also use longer-range ATACMS missiles to hit targets deeper inside Russia\u2019s territory, a move that could dramatically escalate the conflict.<\/p>\n

The situation takes on added complexity as several NATO allies, including Norway, Finland, the UK, France, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Germany, have openly supported Ukraine using Western-supplied weapons for long-range strikes into Russia.<\/p>\n

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg urged alliance members to allow Ukraine to hit legitimate military targets on Russian territory with long-range weapons to aid its self-defence efforts.<\/p>\n

Russia has issued stern warnings over the attacks, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stating Moscow is already aware of Western arms being used against Russian civilian infrastructure and residential areas. President Vladimir Putin cautioned of \u201cserious consequences\u201d if the conflict escalates further, citing previous strikes on Russia\u2019s Belgorod region near Ukraine.<\/p>\n

As the largest combat involving a Western-armed force against Russian troops since World War II shows no sign of abating, the risks of further escalation loom large.
