A senior Russian official praised former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi\u2019s efforts to deepen ties between Iran and Russia during his tenure, which ended with his death earlier this month.<\/p>\n
Babakov, a member of Russia\u2019s Federation Council, made the comments Monday while signing a book of condolences at the Iranian embassy in Moscow following Raisi\u2019s passing on May 12 at age 83.<\/p>\n
Babakov told Iran\u2019s state-run IRNA news agency about Raisi\u2019s constancy of opinion and insistence on moving in the direction of ideals.<\/p>\n
Babakov highlighted Iran\u2019s entry into groups like the BRICS coalition of emerging economies and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization during Raisi\u2019s presidency as \u201can expression of the responsibility\u201d he showed toward the Iranian people.<\/p>\n
Raisi, a conservative cleric who had served as judiciary chief, was elected president in 2021 and spent two years in office before his death from a reported brain haemorrhage. During his tenure, Iran significantly expanded economic and strategic cooperation with Russia amid unprecedented Western sanctions on both nations.<\/p>\n
He even said that they will continue to foster the same in the future and continue treading in Raisi\u2019s footsteps, suggesting Russia hopes the bilateral partnership will remain strong under Raisi\u2019s successor.<\/p>\n
Iran became a permanent member of the BRICS bloc alongside Russia, China, Brazil and India in April. It also received approval in April to enter the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, led by Russia and China.<\/p>\n
The deepening Iran-Russia alliance has drawn concerns from the West given the countries\u2019 obstructionist roles in conflict zones.
