Russian missile strikes slammed into the city of Chuhuiv in northeastern Ukraine\u2019s Kharkiv region early Thursday, wounding at least seven civilians and damaging civilian infrastructure, according to Ukrainian officials.<\/p>\n
The missile barrage, which Kharkiv regional governor Oleh Synehubov said was carried out using advanced Russian S-400 air defence systems, left a trail of destruction in the riverside city located just 23 miles from the Russian border.<\/p>\n
Preliminary reports from local police stated the strikes hit a kindergarten and residential home in Chuhuiv. Dramatic photos and video footage showed the smouldering wreckage of the kindergarten building with smoke billowing from shattered windows and holes blasting through its walls.<\/p>\n
He added that the wounded had been hospitalized with various injuries and that emergency services were working to fully assess the scale of the damage and any other potential casualties.<\/p>\n
The missile attack marked the latest in a recent string of strikes Russian forces have conducted against cities and towns in the Kharkiv region after failing to capture the area\u2019s capital of Kharkiv in the early stages of their invasion. Moscow\u2019s troops pulled back from around Kharkiv last year but have continued pounding urban areas with long-range missiles and artillery.<\/p>\n
Just last week, Russian strikes hit Kharkiv itself as well as other outlying communities, killing and wounding an undisclosed number of civilians according to Ukrainian officials.<\/p>\n
Chuhuiv, which sits on the banks of the Siverskyi Donets River, had a pre-war population of around 30,000. It is unclear how many residents may have fled the area over the past year of conflict.<\/p>\n
Ukrainian authorities continue to accuse Russia of deliberately targeting civilian areas, allegations the Kremlin has denied amid its broader rhetoric claiming Moscow\u2019s forces avoid strikes on non-military targets.<\/p>\n
As the latest Russian bombardment illustrated, the citizens of the Kharkiv region remain squarely in the crosshairs as the invasion grinds on.
