Moscow is paying close attention to U.S. nuclear activities, including a recent subcritical experiment at the Nevada National Security Site, according to statements by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov.<\/p>\n
Last week, the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration announced it had successfully conducted a subcritical nuclear test at its PULSE facility in Nevada. The agency stated the trial allowed it to collect \u201cessential data\u201d related to nuclear warhead performance without violating the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty\u2019s prohibition on nuclear explosions.<\/p>\n
He added that Russia understands such subcritical experiments test components and systems of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, which Washington claims does not breach the CTBT that both nations have signed but not ratified. The deputy minister stated that their stance will remain unchanged as long as the U.S. does not conduct actual nuclear tests.<\/p>\n
However, Ryabkov stressed that \u201csignals\u201d from Washington suggest possible further development of U.S. nuclear weapons capabilities, including warhead design. He said Moscow takes this prospect \u201cseriously\u201d as it plans its own actions.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month, Russia announced upcoming drills to test its ability to deploy tactical nuclear weapons, citing the \u201cpower politics\u201d pursued against it by the U.S. and allies supporting Ukraine with increasingly powerful weapons like long-range ATACMS missiles.<\/p>\n
The Kremlin\u2019s statement came after Poland raised hosting U.S. nuclear arms and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed sending NATO troops to Ukraine, ratcheting up nuclear rhetoric.<\/p>\n
