In a large-scale evacuation amid escalating Russian strikes, Ukrainian emergency officials report nearly 10,000 civilians have been relocated from villages in the Kharkiv region along the border with Russia.<\/p>\n
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine announced Sunday that 9,900 people had been evacuated from border communities in the northeastern Oblast as fighting has intensified in the area over recent weeks.<\/p>\n
Video footage from the evacuations showed long lines of civilians boarding buses, some carrying only a few bags of belongings. Elderly residents could be seen pushed in wheelchairs, while parents tried to comfort distressed children.<\/p>\n
The Vovchansk community, situated directly along the Russian frontier, accounted for a large portion of the evacuation \u2014 with 2,500 residents forced to flee the frontline bombardments.<\/p>\n
He added that several villages in the Kupiansk and Vovchansk districts were \u201csimply uninhabitable\u201d due to the destruction from Moscow\u2019s indiscriminate attacks against the border zone.<\/p>\n
Though the Kharkiv region saw a few months of relative calm after Ukraine\u2019s forces pushed back an initial Russian offensive last year, the area has emerged as a critical battleground once again. Both sides have poured in reinforcements ahead of anticipated new offensives.<\/p>\n
Of the evacuated residents, many were forced to abandon their homes and belongings with only the clothes on their backs. Ukrainian officials have been working to provide temporary shelter, food, and other humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n
