India has successfully carried out trials of its indigenous Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) anti-submarine missile system off the coast of Balasore in Odisha, marking a major milestone in the country\u2019s anti-submarine warfare capabilities.<\/p>\n
The Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system is being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the Indian Navy. It comprises a supersonic missile that can accurately launch a torpedo against hostile submarines up to 650 km away.<\/p>\n
During the trial conducted earlier this week, the SMART missile was fired from a ground launcher and covered its full range, travelling at supersonic speeds before releasing the torpedo around 30 meters above the water\u2019s surface. The torpedo then carried out the final attack on the target at the designated depth.<\/p>\n
Defence officials hailed the trial as a major success for the country\u2019s anti-submarine warfare prowess. The SMART system allows Indian submarines and surface ships to accurately engage submarines over long distances, significantly increasing the navy\u2019s lethality against underwater threats.<\/p>\n
The SMART project has been in development for several years jointly by DRDO labs including the Hyderabad-based Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) and the Visakhapatnam-based Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL).<\/p>\n
India\u2019s current anti-submarine warfare capabilities are focused on torpedo launches and airborne systems like depth charges and lightweight torpedoes from aircraft and helicopters. The SMART system adds a formidable long-range option using supersonic missile-launched torpedoes.<\/p>\n
