According to Mayor Vitaliy Barabash, Ukrainian troops in the eastern town of Avdiivka are facing intense gunfire from all sides, and the situation is getting worse. Worn down by battle since February 2022, Russian forces are putting increasing pressure on the town as they try to cut off supplies and encircle well-established Ukrainian defences.<\/p>\n
Mayor Barabash highlighted the severity of the fighting when he said, \u201cThe enemy is storming with very numerous forces, making the situation difficult and hot.\u201d With 32,000 people living there formerly, Avdiivka is today home to just 941 people because of the devastation caused by the ongoing conflict.<\/p>\n
Situated inside the industrial Donbas region, only 15 kilometres north of the Russian-occupied city of Donetsk, Avdiivka is strategically significant. Serving as the entry point to Donetsk, Avdiivka is viewed by both Russian and Ukrainian forces as a pivotal location in the larger conflict over the eastern Donbas provinces, specifically Donetsk and Luhansk.<\/p>\n
Due to the town\u2019s strategic importance, the battle has become more intense as Russian forces attempt\u00a0to seize total control of the area. The strategic significance of Avdiivka is increased by its closeness to Donetsk, which makes it a battleground whose outcome could have a big impact on the dynamics of the ongoing conflict.<\/p>\n
