Kazakhstan has begun preparations to send peacekeepers to the Middle East and Africa. Members of Parliament have unanimously endorsed President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev\u2019s proposal to dispatch up to 430 peacekeepers to various UN missions, which represents a major development in Kazakhstan\u2019s changing international role.<\/p>\n
Kazakhstan\u2019s peacekeeping mission is wide-ranging and includes important UN missions like the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO, Palestine \u2013 Israel), the UN Observer Force for Disengagement in the Golan Heights (UNDOF, Syria \u2013 Israel), the UN Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS, South Sudan), and UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA, Sudan).<\/p>\n

Defense Minister Ruslan Zhaksylykov described the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan\u2019s readiness to provide a variety of resources to United Nations missions during a joint meeting of the parliamentary chambers. Offering individual military personnel as staff officers and observers is one way to support UN peacekeeping operations. Other essential elements include infantry, medical, engineering, and reconnaissance support.<\/p>\n
Kazakhstan\u2019s commitment is noteworthy in that it sent its first independent national peacekeeping contingent. This reserve company, which consists of 139 soldiers with their uniforms, weapons, and personal belongings, will be sent to the UN mission that is in charge of keeping an eye on disengagement in the Golan Heights.<\/p>\n
The deployment is slated to take place in March 2024, and the upcoming international agreement with the UN will specify the responsibilities of each party, including matters of logistical and financial support.
