The wage revision, which had been under discussion for several months, will affect workers across 12 major ports in India, including Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. The new wage structure is expected to bring substantial financial relief to port workers, whose demands for better compensation have gained momentum amid rising living costs and inflation.
The NBFC, launched by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, will play a pivotal role in channelling funds to key projects under the Sagarmala initiative, which aims to reduce logistics costs, enhance port connectivity, and promote sustainable development along India’s extensive coastline.
Industry experts have welcomed these initiatives, noting that they could significantly enhance the capacity and competitiveness of India’s maritime sector.
The Indira Container Terminal, a key asset in Mumbai’s port infrastructure, has been plagued by operational challenges and financial difficulties, which may have contributed to the lack of interest in the auction.
The proposed multi-purpose berth will be designed to accommodate various types of cargo, including bulk, general, and containerized goods. This development aligns with the Sagarmala project's objective of modernizing and expanding India's port infrastructure to improve connectivity, efficiency, and trade competitiveness.
