External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the foundation of India-Maldives ties on “mutual interests” and “reciprocal sensitivity” during talks with Maldivian counterpart Moosa Zameer. This dialogue marks Zameer’s inaugural high-level visit to New Delhi since President Mohamed Muizzu, with pro-China leanings, assumed office six months ago.
Jaishankar underscored the intrinsic connection between the two nations as close neighbours, emphasizing the alignment of their interests and sensitivities. He reiterated India’s commitment to its Neighbourhood First policy and the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision, aiming to fortify convergence across various domains.
Amid recent strains due to Muizzu’s call for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives, Jaishankar highlighted India’s longstanding developmental assistance to the country. From infrastructure projects to medical facilities, India’s contributions have positively impacted the lives of Maldivian citizens, reflecting a robust partnership.
Jaishankar also noted India’s role as a “First Responder” in times of need for the Maldives, extending financial support and bolstering security cooperation through shared activities and capacity-building initiatives. These collaborative efforts have not only enhanced the security and well-being of the Maldives but have also fostered a sense of resilience and trust between the two nations.
The dialogue between Jaishankar and Zameer serves as a testimony to their commitment to fostering mutual understanding and cooperation, while India and the Maldives face an evolving geopolitical dynamic. A beacon of stability and cooperation in the region is India’s enduring ties with Maldives, which are based on mutual interest and sensitivity.
