Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính delivered a powerful address during Việt Nam’s Innovation Day, celebrating the fifth anniversary of the National Innovation Centre (NIC). He emphasized that innovation is essential for the nation’s economic growth and sustainable development, asserting that the government is committed to fostering a vibrant ecosystem for creativity and technological advancement.
The Prime Minister highlighted the significance of science, technology, and innovation as key drivers of productivity and competitiveness. He referenced the 13th Party Congress Resolution, which prioritizes these sectors to enhance national productivity and quality. Legal frameworks, including the Science and Technology Law, explicitly underscore innovation’s role in economic and social progress.
Việt Nam’s innovation landscape has expanded impressively, with around 4,000 start-ups, 208 investment funds, and numerous incubators and creative centers. The country ranks 56th globally in the start-up ecosystem and 44th in the Global Innovation Index for 2024. These achievements reflect a growing recognition of innovation’s impact on national development.
The Prime Minister identified three key principles for advancing innovation: it must be a strategic priority, focus on people and businesses—especially youth—and encourage bold thinking and risk-taking. He proclaimed October 1 as National Innovation Day, marking it as a day to inspire future breakthroughs.
NIC has played a crucial role in bridging gaps between the government, universities, and businesses, facilitating collaboration that enhances the innovation capacity of start-ups. In partnership with global tech giants like Google and Meta, NIC provides training programs and opportunities for Vietnamese entrepreneurs.
The event featured global technology leaders, including Meta’s Nick Clegg, who announced plans to expand production of the Quest 3S device in Việt Nam, potentially creating 1,000 jobs. Additionally, Meta aims to launch a Vietnamese-language virtual assistant, “Meta AI,” designed to empower local businesses and individuals.
Overall, Việt Nam’s Innovation Day serves as a significant milestone, signaling the country’s commitment to harnessing innovation as a fundamental component of its economic growth strategy.
