Nine dead, four critically injured in northern Vietnam landslide

Nine people were found dead at the site, while four others sustained critical injuries in Vietnam’s northern province of Ha Giang.

In a tragic incident early Saturday morning, a landslide claimed the lives of at least nine individuals travelling in a minibus in Vietnam’s northern province of Ha Giang. The Vietnam News Agency reported that the incident occurred in Bac Me district, where the vehicle was overwhelmed by a landslide while navigating a mountainous road.

The minibus, carrying approximately 16 passengers, was travelling through the district when it encountered unstable terrain, leading to a catastrophic landslide. In a desperate bid to seek help, all passengers reportedly exited the vehicle after it became trapped. Unfortunately, before assistance could arrive, the landslide buried several individuals under a heavy mass of earth and debris.

Emergency response teams swiftly arrived at the scene, engaging in an arduous rescue operation. Despite their efforts, nine people were found dead at the site, while four others sustained critical injuries. The injured were immediately transported to a nearby medical facility, where they are receiving intensive care.

The rugged terrain and adverse weather conditions in Ha Giang have made the area particularly susceptible to landslides. This recent disaster underscores the persistent threat posed by natural hazards in the region, which has historically been prone to such incidents. Local authorities have been urged to reinforce preventive measures and enhance early warning systems to mitigate future risks.

As the community mourns this profound loss, the government has pledged to provide support to the affected families and investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by those travelling through Vietnam’s mountainous regions during the rainy season.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have issued advisories for travellers to exercise caution in the affected areas.
