Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that construction of Changi Airport’s long-awaited Terminal 5 (T5) is set to begin in the first half of 2025. The development of T5 comes as part of Singapore’s ongoing efforts to solidify its status as a leading aviation hub, amid growing air traffic demand and recovery from the global pandemic.
Speaking during the National Day Rally, PM Wong emphasized the importance of Terminal 5 for the nation’s future economic growth and competitiveness. Once completed, T5 will elevate Changi’s total handling capacity to over 135 million passengers per year.
The Terminal 5 project had been put on hold in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but with air travel demand on the rise again, the Singaporean government is pushing forward with the project. Wong noted that the new terminal would feature cutting-edge technology, offering an enhanced travel experience for passengers and improving efficiency for airlines.
T5 will be integrated with the existing terminals, making Changi one of the most seamless and efficient airports globally. The design will also incorporate sustainability features to minimize environmental impact, aligning with Singapore’s broader climate action goals.
The construction of Terminal 5 is expected to generate significant economic benefits for Singapore. PM Wong highlighted that the project would create thousands of jobs across various sectors, including construction, engineering, and hospitality.
Changi Airport, which has been ranked as one of the best airports in the world for several years, is seen as a key pillar of Singapore’s economy. The construction of T5 is part of a long-term plan to ensure that the airport remains competitive amid evolving global trends in aviation.
