Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma heralded August 3, 2024, as a ‘golden day’ for the state as the Bhumi Pujan ceremony was performed for Tata’s Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad, Morigaon district. This pivotal event marks a significant advancement in the establishment of a major technological and economic development in the region.
Chief Minister Sarma expressed profound gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tata Sons Limited, assuring Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran that the project would proceed smoothly. He emphasized the lasting appreciation of Assam’s people for the initiative and assured that the company would face no difficulties in establishing the plant.
Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, praised the project’s potential impact, noting, “The semiconductor plant is a foundational industry that will not only enhance our technological capabilities but will also stimulate growth in many downstream industries. This investment of Rs 27,000 crore will have a far-reaching impact on both the local and national economy.”
Chandrasekaran highlighted the project’s ambitious scope, revealing that Tata has already hired 1,000 local workers. The plant is expected to create over 27,000 jobs, with 15,000 direct roles and an additional 12,000 indirect positions. Tata aims to expedite the construction and anticipates operational readiness by mid-2025.
Strategically located to utilize abundant water, green power, and proximity to semiconductor hubs in Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore, the new facility will significantly bolster India’s hi-tech manufacturing sector. The development is set to enhance the semiconductor ecosystem in the country and provide a substantial economic boost to the region, marking a transformative moment for Assam’s industrial landscape.
