The anticipation is palpable as the Indian Navy gears up to host MILAN-2024, with Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral R. Hari Kumar announcing that 46 countries have confirmed their participation in the prestigious event. Scheduled to be conducted in Visakhapatnam from February 19 to 27, MILAN-2024 promises to be a gathering of maritime forces from around the world, with four more nations expected to confirm their participation shortly.
Speaking to reporters onboard INS Sandhayak, the Navy’s survey vessel, which was recently commissioned by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Admiral Hari Kumar expressed optimism about the event’s potential for fostering meaningful discussions on naval activities that would benefit participating nations as well as the host city.
Admiral Hari Kumar remarked that invitations had been extended to 60 countries by the Navy. He expressed anticipation for constructive dialogue and collaboration during MILAN-2024, mentioning that the event would also entail visits to local sites by the participants.
In a significant development highlighting the Navy’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, Admiral Hari Kumar emphasized that all roles and ranks in the Navy are now open to women.
Talking about the operational capabilities of INS Sandhayak, Admiral Hari Kumar revealed that the vessel would serve as a hospital at sea in the event of any casualties on ships. Furthermore, he announced plans for the induction of three more Sandhayak-class ships by next year, underscoring the Navy’s ongoing modernization efforts.
Addressing the issue of national security, Admiral Hari Kumar reflected the Navy’s vigilance in safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests. He referenced the Anti-Piracy Act introduced in December 2022, which empowers the Navy to counter any anti-national activities effectively.
Admiral Hari Kumar added that aligning with their commitment to innovation and technological advancement, the Navy had developed indigenous anti-drone equipment and had deployed ships for anti-drone operations.
Turning to the Indian Navy’s relations with the Maldives, Admiral Hari Kumar affirmed the robust military cooperation between the two nations. He affirmed that strong military ties were maintained with the Maldives, highlighting the strategic importance of fostering regional partnerships in the Indian Ocean region.
