Morepen Labs raises ₹250 crore through QIP with greenshoe option

The industry plays a significant role in global pharmaceutical exports, with India contributing over $25 billion.

Morepen Labs unveiled a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) on August 1, aiming to raise ₹250 crore through the issuance of shares. The placement sets the floor price at ₹57.23 per share, offering a discount of up to 5 per cent. This means that the indicative price for the QIP is approximately ₹54.37 per share. Motilal Oswal is managing the issue as the banker.

This move follows the company’s board approval for the share issue, which was granted in February 2024. The resolution for this placement was formally passed during an Extraordinary General Meeting held in March 2024. Since the announcement of the QIP, Morepen Laboratories’ shares have shown a positive response in the market, rising nearly 3 per cent to trade around ₹61.50 per share.

Morepen Labs is a prominent entity in the pharmaceutical sector, with a focus on the production and marketing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and generic formulations. The company’s strategic decision to raise funds through the QIP is seen as a move to bolster its operations and expand its market presence.

The Indian pharmaceutical industry, in which Morepen Labs plays a significant role, is experiencing robust growth. It is projected to reach a market size of $65 billion by 2024 and is expected to double to $130 billion by 2030. The industry plays a significant role in global pharmaceutical exports, with India contributing over $25 billion. Notably, India meets about 20 per cent of the global demand for generic drugs, underscoring the country’s pivotal role in the pharmaceutical landscape.

The QIP proceeds will likely support Morepen Labs in its efforts to enhance its production capabilities, invest in research and development, and expand its market share. As the company navigates the evolving pharmaceutical sector, this funding will be instrumental in achieving its growth objectives and sustaining its competitive edge in a rapidly expanding market.
