India has committed to replacing its military personnel in one of the three aviation platforms in the Maldives by March 10, with a full completion of replacement by May 10, according to the Maldives Foreign Ministry. The second meeting of the high-level core group between the two nations took place in the national capital, where both sides affirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation in defence, security, economic, and development partnerships.
According to the Maldives Foreign Ministry, both parties agreed that the Government of India will replace military personnel in one of the three aviation platforms by 10 March 2024, and will complete the replacement of military personnel in the other two platforms by May 10, 2024.
The discussions also included a review of existing bilateral cooperation to improve and strengthen partnerships in various fields. It was mutually decided that the third meeting of the high-level core group will be convened in Male during the last week of February.
Addressing concerns about the continued operation of Indian aviation platforms providing humanitarian and medvac services in the Maldives, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized that both countries had reached mutually workable solutions. The MEA highlighted the ongoing discussions on diverse issues related to bilateral cooperation, emphasizing the need to expedite the implementation of ongoing development projects.
The cooperation between India and the Maldives extends beyond military aspects, encompassing a broader spectrum, including defence, security, economic partnerships, and developmental projects. The commitment to continued dialogue and mutually beneficial solutions underscores the resilience and depth of the bilateral relationship.
Notably, the Maldives President, Mohamed Muizzu, had previously urged the Indian government to withdraw troops before March 15, a key campaign promise of his party. The presence of around 70 Indian troops, Dornier 228 maritime patrol aircraft, and two HAL Dhruv helicopters in the Maldives has been a point of discussion. President Muizzu officially requested the Indian government to withdraw its military personnel shortly after assuming office, following claims of reaching an agreement on the matter after dialogues with the Indian government.
