India and Timor-Leste strengthen bonds President Murmu to open embassy in Dili

President Droupadi Murmu expressed gratitude for the Grand Collar of the Order of Timor-Leste award and announced plans to open an Indian embassy in the country, enhancing consular services for Indian citizens.

In a heartfelt address to the Indian community in Dili, Timor-Leste, President Droupadi Murmu conveyed her appreciation for the warm reception and recognition received from the Timorese leadership. “I am thankful to President Horta for his special interactive session earlier. This is his expression of affection and respect towards India and Indians,” Murmu stated, highlighting the growing bond between the two nations.

Murmu also spoke of the prestigious Grand Collar of the Order of Timor-Leste, awarded to her as a symbol of the deep and respectful relationship shared between India and Timor-Leste. “This award is proof of a similar emotion,” she remarked, reflecting on the significance of the gesture. This visit is part of her three-nation tour.

India’s longstanding diplomatic relationship with Timor-Leste, which began soon after the country’s independence, is rooted in shared democratic values and mutual respect. President Murmu underscored the importance of this partnership and announced a significant development in enhancing diplomatic and consular services. “We will soon open an embassy in Timor-Leste. This will ensure better consular services for Indian citizens and people with Indian roots,” she said.

The opening of the Indian embassy is set to strengthen bilateral ties and provide a more robust support system for the Indian community residing in Timor-Leste. This move aligns with India’s commitment to fostering international relations and supporting its diaspora.
