The death toll from the devastating landslides in Wayanad district has climbed to 23, with three children among the deceased, according to Kerala Health Minister Veena George. The tragic increase in casualties underscores the severity of the natural disaster that has ravaged the region over the past few days.
Minister George, addressing the media, confirmed the grim statistics and extended her condolences to the families affected by the catastrophe. “Our hearts go out to the victims’ families. We are doing everything possible to provide relief and support to those impacted by this tragedy,” she stated.
Heavy monsoon rains triggered multiple landslides across Wayanad, burying homes and cutting off access to several remote villages. Rescue operations, led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local authorities, and volunteers, have been ongoing despite challenging weather conditions and difficult terrain.
Emergency services have been working around the clock to locate and rescue survivors trapped under the debris. Minister George noted that additional NDRF teams have been deployed to expedite rescue efforts. “We are prioritizing the swift and safe evacuation of affected residents and providing necessary medical care,” she emphasized.
The Kerala government has announced an immediate relief package for the affected families, including financial assistance and rehabilitation measures. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has called for an emergency meeting to assess the situation and coordinate further relief efforts. The state has also appealed to the central government for additional support and resources.
Local hospitals are on high alert, with medical teams mobilized to handle the influx of injured victims. Temporary shelters have been set up to accommodate those displaced by the landslides, providing food, water, and medical aid. Environmental experts attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of landslides in Kerala to deforestation, unregulated construction, and climate change, which have exacerbated the region’s vulnerability to natural disaster.
As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on providing immediate relief and preventing further casualties. The Kerala government has urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and cooperate with evacuation efforts to ensure their safety.
