Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has raised significant alarm over the deteriorating situation in Bangladesh, where over 300 lives have been lost since July 1, 2024. Tharoor’s comments underscore the deep concern regarding the escalating crisis in the neighboring country, which has seen violent protests and severe unrest following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and a subsequent military takeover.
In his statement, Tharoor remarked, “It’s very worrying; first of all, as you know some 300 lives have been lost since July 1 when the trouble started, and that’s already been a matter of grave concern for all of us. Bangladesh is our neighboring country, people there are our own brothers and sisters… what happens there affects our neighborhood as well in a very intimate way. Bangladesh, on three sides, is surrounded by India, so that’s an important concern.”
The unrest in Bangladesh has led to widespread violence and significant loss of life, with the military now in control and an indefinite curfew imposed in the capital, Dhaka. The crisis has also led to heightened security measures along the India-Bangladesh border, affecting regional stability and raising humanitarian concerns.
Tharoor’s comments reflect broader anxieties about the impact of the crisis on regional security and the lives of people in India, given the close geographical and cultural ties between the two countries. The ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh has prompted calls for international attention and support to address the underlying issues and work towards a resolution.
As the situation evolves, the international community, including India, remains vigilant and concerned about the ramifications of the crisis on regional stability and the well-being of affected populations.
