Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the end of VIP culture by imposing new guidelines for government functions in a major policy shift. Sarma announced in a tweet on July 29 that henceforth only vegetarian food and satvik will be served at all government functions.
The announcement, which aims to promote simplicity and reduce elitism, reflects the state government’s commitment to address VIP culture and ensure a more inclusive approach at public events. Prepared according to traditional Hindu food practices, Satvik food emphasizes purity and simplicity, which is in line with the government’s goal of promoting a more modest and egalitarian environment.
Sarma announced in his tweet, “Our government will end VIP culture… From now on, every government program will offer only vegetarian and sattvic food.” The move is seen as part of a broader initiative to streamline government processes and strengthen the principles of equity and frugality.
The decision has been implemented. Supporters of the policy says it is a move to eliminate unnecessary waste and promote ethical and cultural values towards adjustment. The Assam government is expected to implement these guidelines at all official functions and public events, reflecting a wider trend in some Indian states to curb excesses promote a more egalitarian approach to governance.
