Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is poised to take over as the Interim Prime Minister of Bangladesh today, following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina on Monday. This political transition follows weeks of severe violence that has resulted in hundreds of deaths and displaced thousands nationwide.
Before formally assuming office, Yunus addressed the nation, extending congratulations to the student protesters who he credited with making “our second Victory Day possible.” In his statement, Yunus called for a continued commitment to peace and strongly condemned any acts of violence, emphasizing the need for a united effort to rebuild the nation.
The move to appoint Yunus as Interim PM is seen as a crucial step towards stabilizing the country. His leadership is anticipated to bring a much-needed reprieve to the ongoing turmoil and to address the critical issues facing Bangladesh. As the new government is expected to take shape on Thursday, all political factions have been urged to collaborate in the national rebuilding efforts.
In neighboring India, authorities remain vigilant amidst the unfolding situation. A recent report from a Border Security Force (BSF) official revealed that although there were attempts by Bangladeshis to cross into India, the border was securely sealed. The individuals were subsequently sent back by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
As Bangladesh prepares for this pivotal transition, both national and international observers are closely monitoring the developments, hopeful that Yunus’ leadership will steer the country towards stability and recovery.
