AK Party to celebrate 23 years in Turkish politics with landmark event in Turkey

The AK Party, celebrating its 23rd anniversary, will host a special event featuring a new song and simultaneous provincial celebrations. Erdoğan will address members and oversee new admissions amid significant political shifts.

The Justice and Development Party (AK Party), one of Turkey’s most influential political organizations, is set to commemorate its 23rd anniversary on August 14. Founded in 2002, the party has been led by incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who has guided it through numerous election victories since its inception as the country’s 39th political party.

In anticipation of this milestone, the AK Party is preparing a special event featuring several “firsts,” including the debut of a newly composed song specifically for the occasion. First Lady Emine Erdoğan, AK Party founders, and ministers will attend the celebration. However, provincial chairpersons will not be present at the central event; instead, simultaneous celebrations will occur across all 81 provinces. Video presentations will highlight the party’s journey, including its challenges and achievements.

Erdoğan will address party members during the event and personally present badges to new members. The event is expected to attract opposition lawmakers and mayors, many of whom are considering joining the AK Party despite its recent setbacks in the March 31 local elections.

At least three parliamentarians from the Felicity Party (SP), the Future Party (GP), and the Good Party (IP) are rumoured to be ready to switch to the AK Party on August 14, pending Erdoğan’s approval. Erdoğan has instructed his aides to be cautious with new admissions, emphasizing that only those committed to the party’s principles should be accepted. There is also speculation that new admissions might be possible in October.

Such transitions could significantly alter the composition of Parliament. Nine lawmakers who left the IP, the Democracy and Progress Party (DEVA), and the Democrat Party (DP) are expected to initiate a new movement. If the anticipated shift of three lawmakers to the AK Party occurs, it could lead to the dissolution of the FP and SP parliamentary groups due to unmet quotas.

With over 11 million members, the AK Party holds the largest membership base among Turkish political parties. Established by former members of the Virtue Party (FP), it was initially seen as a fleeting political entity. However, Erdoğan’s unexpected rise to prominence as Istanbul’s mayor and the party’s consistent electoral successes have established it as a dominant force in Turkish politics praised for ending the era of coalition governments and fostering national development.
