Kuwait’s Cabinet has decreed the establishment of Governorate Councils across the nation’s six governorates. This initiative aims to improve public service delivery efficiency and strengthen local administration’s role.
The respective governor will lead each council and include several key members: the deputy governor, representatives from state departments appointed by relevant ministers in collaboration with the governor, and three resident citizens selected by the governor. This structure is designed to ensure a balanced representation of government officials and local community members.
The primary function of these councils will be to meet regularly and address issues related to the services provided by the government within their governorates. By doing so, the councils are expected to play a crucial role in enhancing the responsiveness and effectiveness of local administration. Additionally, the councils will support governors in their efforts to implement state policies and oversee development plans more efficiently.
This move follows the Cabinet’s recent approval of a draft bill aimed at empowering governors with a more active supervisory role in executing state policies and development strategies. The bill underscores the government’s commitment to decentralizing administrative functions and improving governance at the local level.
Establishing Governorate Councils marks a pivotal step towards more localized decision-making and oversight, reflecting Kuwait’s broader efforts to refine its administrative framework and promote greater civic involvement in governance. As these councils begin their work, they are expected to foster greater collaboration between government officials and residents, ultimately contributing to more effective and tailored public service delivery across the nation.
