The tragic helicopter accident claiming the lives of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian attention turns to the constitutional protocol for succession in Iran. Under Article 131 of the Iranian Constitution, in the event of the President’s death, authority is delegated to the first vice president, pending confirmation by the Supreme Leader.

At present, Mohammad Mokhber holds the position of first vice president, placing him in the spotlight as the nation navigates the aftermath of the devastating loss of its leaders. As the designated successor, Mokhber’s role becomes pivotal in ensuring continuity of governance and stability during this period of transition.
The constitutional provision outlines a clear and orderly process for succession, aimed at preserving the integrity of Iran’s political institutions in times of crisis. With the endorsement of the Supreme Leader, the first vice president assumes the responsibilities and powers of the presidency, including the execution of state affairs and representation of the nation on the international stage.

Mohammad Mokhber, a seasoned administrator and trusted figure within Iranian political circles, brings a wealth of experience to his role as first vice president. Before his current position, Mokhber served as the head of the Execution of Imam Khomeini’s Order (EIKO), a powerful state-affiliated charitable organization involved in various socio-economic initiatives.  The appointment of Mohammad Mokhber as the first vice president provides a sense of continuity and reassurance to the Iranian people during this challenging time.
