In a compelling address at the Wilson Center in Washington, D.C., Taiwan’s Representative to the United States, Alexander Yui, highlighted the urgent need for bolstered international economic integration with Taiwan, emphasizing its pivotal role in fortifying the island nation’s security amidst escalating tensions with China.
Yui articulated that amid the looming threats of a potential Chinese invasion, Taiwan must not only fortify its defence capabilities but also fortify its economic ties with the global community. According to a report by CNA, Yui highlighted that increased economic integration would not only enhance Taiwan’s resilience but also contribute to its safety.
Drawing attention to recent diplomatic milestones, Yui revealed that Taiwan had successfully concluded negotiations with the United States on the second phase of the 21st Century Trade Agreement. Furthermore, Taiwan aspires to join key regional economic frameworks such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity, spearheaded by the Biden administration.
Addressing security concerns, Yui emphasized Taiwan’s substantial investments in defence preparedness, with this year’s defence budget amounting to 2.5% of the nation’s GDP. He asserted Taiwan’s commitment to enhancing its indigenous defence capabilities, including the development of missiles, ships, submarines, and other crucial armaments, expressing a willingness to collaborate with the U.S. defence supply chain.
Reiterating Taiwan’s stance on sovereignty, Yui affirmed that Taiwan, as a sovereign entity, refrains from declaring independence, opting instead to maintain the status quo. He expressed hope for international recognition of Taiwan’s status and stressed the island’s indispensable role in contributing to the global community.
