Taiwan airline seeks approval for charter flights to Japan’s Yonaguni Island

The airline has identified the route as ideal for its aircraft, citing Yonaguni’s proximity to Taiwan as a significant factor.

Apex Aviation, a Taiwanese airline, has submitted an application to the Civil Aviation Authority seeking permission to operate charter flights between Taiwan and Yonaguni Island, Japan. The company announced on Wednesday, 18 September, that it aims to commence flights in 2025 if granted approval, according to the Central News Agency (CNA).

The airline has identified the route as ideal for its aircraft, citing Yonaguni’s proximity to Taiwan as a significant factor. Apex Aviation plans to use its 11-seat Tecnam P2012 Traveller for the service, provided the application is successful. The airline further revealed that, pending a preliminary permit, it would start test flights to Ishigaki Island, located slightly east of Yonaguni.

The specific departure airport in Taiwan has yet to be disclosed. Yonaguni Airport is situated approximately 145 kilometres from Hualien Airport and about 160 kilometres from Taipei’s Songshan Airport. At present, no direct flights or ferry services connect Yonaguni with Taiwan.

In a related development, the former legislative speaker of Taiwan visited Yonaguni by boat in July. He expressed hope that this visit would pave the way for future ferry services between the two locations, highlighting ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity in the region.

Apex Aviation’s proposed route aims to bridge a significant gap in transport options between Taiwan and Japan, potentially facilitating increased travel and economic exchanges between the two regions.
