Former Chinese President Ma Ying-jeou criticized the current administration’s cross-strait policies in a speech in Bangkok, Thailand on Sunday, August 4, calling for a return to the “one China principle.” Speaking at the 27th “Zhongshan Lecture” series hosted by the Chinese Association of Thailand, Ma shared his views on the strained cross-strait relationship, according to UDN.
Ma criticized President Lai Ching-te for abandoning the “one China, with different interpretations” stance in favor of a “new theory of two nations.” He urged the Lai administration to reconsider and revert to the previously established agreements and policies governing cross-strait relations. Ma emphasized the importance of regional peace and prosperity, advocating for increased efforts from countries like the U.S. and other allies of Taiwan to promote dialogue between Taipei and Beijing.
During his remarks, Ma referenced his April meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing, where he highlighted that war in the Taiwan Strait would cause immense suffering for people on both sides. He described Xi as modest and full of goodwill towards the Taiwanese people, asserting that Xi is willing to negotiate sincerely, provided Taiwan accepts Beijing’s assertion that it is part of China.
Ma expressed his disappointment with the current administration’s stance, stating that he felt sad, disgusted, and worried about its “contemptuous attitude” towards Chinese culture. When asked about the possibility of future conflict, Ma acknowledged his concerns but believed the likelihood of war remains low. He called for both Taipei and Beijing to focus on rebuilding mutual trust to ensure regional peace.
This speech marked Ma’s second visit to Thailand, with his previous visit occurring in 1996, over 28 years ago, as reported by UDN.
