KMT maintains cooperation with TPP amid corruption probe

Kuomintang (KMT) Chair Eric Chu reaffirmed his party’s commitment to collaborating with the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) despite ongoing corruption investigations into former TPP Chair Ko Wen-je. Speaking during a visit to Yunlin on Friday, 13th September, Chu emphasised that such cooperation is a “natural thing,” reflecting the public’s desire for rigorous government oversight, according to SETN.

The KMT currently enjoys a slender majority in the legislature. The partnership with the TPP, Chu argued, enhances the KMT’s ability to secure necessary votes for legislative processes. This alliance is deemed crucial for advancing their agenda, as it improves legislative efficiency and effectiveness.

Responding to a recent poll conducted by the Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation, Chu addressed public concerns regarding the fairness of the investigation into Ko. The survey, which sampled 1,016 individuals, revealed that 40% of respondents believe Ko has been treated fairly, while 26% disagree. Chu maintained that the KMT advocates for an impartial judicial process and asserts that all accusations will be evaluated based on facts.

Ko, who is currently detained, faces allegations of corruption related to a property development scheme from his tenure as Taipei mayor. On 5th September, a court determined there was sufficient evidence to warrant his detention pending further investigation.

Chu’s comments come amid growing scrutiny and political tension surrounding the case. The KMT’s strategic collaboration with the TPP continues despite the legal challenges faced by Ko, as both parties seek to strengthen their legislative influence and address public concerns about governance.
