A Filipino fisher was injured in a collision between a Taiwanese and a Chinese fishing boat on Wednesday, July 31, off the Penghu Islands. The incident, which occurred at approximately 9 a.m., involved the Taiwan-registered Sheng Jung Tsai 36 and the Chinese Min Hui Yu 1486, according to a press release issued by the Taiwan Coast Guard.
The collision resulted in abdominal injuries to the Filipino fisher, who was subsequently transported to Magong in Penghu for medical treatment. Video footage released by the Coast Guard depicted the injured fisher walking independently to an awaiting ambulance. The Taiwanese fishing vessel also sustained hull damage and was redirected to Kaohsiung for necessary repairs.
Upon arrival at the scene, the Taiwan Coast Guard attempted to board the Chinese vessel for inspection. However, the Chinese boat fled the scene, prompting the Coast Guard to deploy a water cannon in an unsuccessful effort to halt its escape. The Chinese boat was later intercepted by the Chinese coast guard around 1 p.m., following communication and provision of evidence from the Taiwanese authorities regarding the collision.
In response to the incident, the Taiwan Coast Guard reported that the matter had been handed over to the fisheries department and the Mainland Affairs Council. These agencies will manage any compensation claims arising from the collision, including those from the injured fisherman and the owners of the damaged Taiwanese vessel.
The Coast Guard emphasized the importance of cooperation between Taiwan and China in handling such maritime incidents to ensure swift resolution and justice for affected parties. The collision has raised concerns about the safety and operational protocols of fishing vessels operating in the region, highlighting the need for stringent enforcement of maritime regulations to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
