On Thursday morning, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan, as reported by the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
The epicentre was at sea, 44 kilometres southeast of Taitung County Hall, with a depth of 11.7 km. The earthquake’s intensity peaked at level 3 on Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale on Green Island, while other areas in Taitung, Hualien, and Pingtung counties registered an intensity of 2, according to CWA data.
The earthquake struck off the coast of Taitung County, Taiwan. The earthquake’s intensity, which measures the actual effects of a seismic event, was highest on Green Island, situated off Taitung’s coastline. Green Island registered an intensity of 3 on Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale.
Other areas that experienced the quake’s impact included other parts of Taitung County, as well as Hualien and Pingtung counties, where an intensity of 2 was recorded according to data from the Central Weather Bureau (CWA).
No immediate reports of damage or injuries resulting from the earthquake have been received so far.
While the quake was felt across multiple regions, its intensity remained relatively moderate, with Green Island experiencing the highest level of shaking at an intensity of 3 on the scale used in Taiwan. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
