Chinese pressure potentially linked to a decrease in visa-free travel for Taiwanese citizens

From the end of last year to April 12, 2024, visa-free access was revoked for Nauru, Kiribati, and Gambia, while visa-on-arrival was rescinded for Liberia, Cameroon, and Togo, according to MOFA.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) revealed on Tuesday, August 6, that Chinese pressure could be contributing to the decline in countries offering visa-free travel to Taiwanese citizens. From the end of last year to April 12, 2024, visa-free access was revoked for Nauru, Kiribati, and Gambia, while visa-on-arrival was rescinded for Liberia, Cameroon, and Togo, according to MOFA.

The ministry noted that each visa arrangement is unique and cannot be generalized but did not dismiss the possibility of Chinese influence playing a role. This information was reported by Liberty Times, highlighting MOFA’s concerns about the potential external pressures impacting Taiwan’s international travel agreements.

In response to these changes, MOFA emphasized its proactive approach in dealing with each instance of visa-free or visa-on-arrival cancellations. The ministry promptly directs relevant overseas missions to negotiate and secure conveniences for Taiwanese citizens, ensuring they face minimal disruptions in their business and travel plans abroad.

A report from the National Audit Office provided additional context, revealing that the number of countries granting visa-free travel to Taiwanese citizens decreased from 171 to 166 between December 2023 and the end of April 2024. Despite this decline, the report acknowledged MOFA’s successful efforts over the past five years in establishing e-visa and visa-free agreements with seven countries, including Argentina and Thailand.

MOFA’s ongoing diplomatic efforts aim to mitigate the impact of any external pressures and maintain the convenience of international travel for Taiwanese citizens. The ministry continues to work diligently to expand and secure travel agreements, ensuring that Taiwanese travelers have access to as many visa-free and visa-on-arrival options as possible.
