North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has recently inspected a newly developed tactical missile weapons system, as reported by state media on Wednesday. Kim emphasized the necessity for an “epochal change” in the country’s war preparations, urging the attainment of arms production plans.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim personally oversaw the inspection of the tactical missile system, which is set to be equipped by the combined missile units of the Korean People’s Army (KPA). However, specific details regarding the nature of the new system or the location of the inspection were not provided.
The KCNA revealed that North Korea’s arms factories have already fulfilled their production targets for the first half of the year. The focus will now shift towards manufacturing the tactical missile weapon system, with plans to complete production by the year’s end. The missile launchers produced in the initial half of the year are slated to be deployed to combined units of the KPA’s western operation group.
Kim Jong-un emphasized the importance of timely completion of ongoing weapons production plans, particularly stressing the need for a change in the KPA’s war preparations by meeting the munitions production plans for 2024.
This inspection follows Kim’s recent visit to major munitions factories where he oversaw the production of sniper rifles and rocket launcher vehicles, emphasizing the enhancement of the military’s artillery capabilities. Moreover, just days prior, Kim supervised the test-firing of controllable shells for an updated version of the 240 mm multiple rocket launcher system, which North Korea plans to deploy in the coming years.
Observers interpret these developments as North Korea’s intensification of rocket launcher shell development, possibly for supplying them to other nations or for conducting further weapons tests aimed at regional tensions, particularly concerning South Korea.
