On August 31, 2024, comedian Yasuko completed a charity marathon on Nippon TV’s “24 Hour TV 47 Will Love Save the Earth?” The event aimed to raise funds for the newly established “Marathon Child Welfare Facility Fund,” reflecting Yasuko’s personal connection to child welfare, having been a resident of a child welfare facility during high school. Despite adverse weather conditions caused by Typhoon No. 10, Yasuko ran 75 laps around Nissan Stadium before finishing the race at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo around 8:40 pm.
The marathon, which drew considerable public interest, witnessed a troubling incident during Yasuko’s final sprint. With only 400 meters remaining, world-renowned musician YOSHIKI performed “Kurenai” live on the piano, as Yasuko approached the finish line. Unfortunately, during this moment, a man was seen reaching out and touching Yasuko’s right breast among the cheering crowd. The support runner’s attempt to intervene was unsuccessful, and Yasuko appeared momentarily shaken but continued to the finish line.
The incident has provoked widespread outrage online, with viewers expressing concern over the lack of security. Criticisms have emerged regarding the program’s inadequate measures to protect participants. Reports indicate that despite the presence of a security guard near the man, no action was taken to prevent the harassment.
TV station officials and various media outlets have noted the heightened viewership ratings during Yasuko’s finish, peaking at 25.4% in the Kanto region. However, the incident’s coverage on platforms like X and online news has sparked debates about the need for improved security protocols and the accountability of event organizers.
NTV faces scrutiny for its handling of the situation, with calls for both immediate action and a review of security practices to ensure the safety of participants in future events.
