Voice actress Miyamura Yuko recalls battle with thyroid diseases and her determination to return to work

Having returned to voice acting, Miyamura remains mindful of her health, taking proactive steps to manage the precursor symptoms of her conditions.

Voice actress Miyamura Yuko, known for her roles in “Neon Genesis Evangelion” and “Detective Conan,” faced severe health challenges after being diagnosed with Graves’ and Hashimoto’s diseases, both thyroid disorders that impacted her career. Miyamura, who began her voice acting career in 1994 and made her breakthrough as Soryu Asuka Langley, first experienced symptoms of Graves’ disease in 2006. Despite feeling constantly unwell, she attributed her symptoms to fatigue from childcare and work demands after the birth of her first child.

Miyamura noted that she finally sought medical attention after a friend advised her to get a regular health check, which led to her diagnosis. After years of medication, the symptoms of Graves’ disease subsided, but new challenges arose when she developed Hashimoto’s disease in 2011 after the birth of her second child. This condition led to severe muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, and slurred speech, further complicating her ability to work.

Miyamura described how the decline in her health affected her ability to continue her voice acting roles, particularly when her speech deteriorated to the point where she considered retiring. The pressure of juggling her career, childcare, and being the family’s primary breadwinner while living between Japan and Australia only added to her stress.

Miyamura expressed her gratitude to her producers and colleagues who supported her through her health challenges. Her producer on “Detective Conan” encouraged her to focus on her recovery, assuring her that her role as Toyama Kazuha would be waiting for her return. This support, she said, was crucial in motivating her to persevere through her treatment.

Having returned to voice acting, Miyamura remains mindful of her health, taking proactive steps to manage the precursor symptoms of her conditions. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasized the importance of health and resilience in overcoming life’s challenges.
