The race for the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) presidential election is heating up as former Minister of State for Economic Security Takayuki Kobayashi (49) is set to announce his candidacy at a press conference on August 19. This will be the first formal declaration in the upcoming election. Digital Minister Taro Kono (61) has also confirmed his intention to run, joining a growing list of more than 10 candidates.
The announcement follows Prime Minister Kishida Fumio’s decision not to seek re-election and his move to dissolve party factions, which has significantly lowered the barriers for potential candidates. This shift has led to an unusually large number of contenders entering the race.
On August 17, Kobayashi delivered a speech in Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, highlighting his commitment to reforming the LDP in response to recent scandals. “I want to work with my colleagues to reform the party and ensure a fresh start,” he said. Kobayashi also expressed his dedication to key issues such as constitutional reform, economic security, and revitalizing the economy. He emphasized his intention to listen to fellow lawmakers and seek broad support.
Meanwhile, Taro Kono, who met with Aso faction chairman Taro Aso on August 16, has solidified his candidacy with strong backing. Aso has endorsed Kono’s bid, urging him to “prepare thoroughly.” Kono has reportedly secured support from 20 sponsors.
Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa (71) also met with Prime Minister Kishida on August 17 to convey her determination to run. She has called on party lawmakers for support, indicating her serious intentions in the presidential race.
The LDP is set to decide the election date during its presidential election management committee meeting on August 20. The two options under consideration are a September 5 announcement with voting on September 20, or a September 12 announcement with voting on September 27. The final schedule will be determined based on the United Nations General Assembly and the extraordinary Diet session.
