Fujitsu unveils ‘Takane’: The world’s most proficient Japanese language model for enterprises

Fujitsu highlights that Takane has achieved impressive results on the Japanese General Language Understanding Evaluation (JGLUE) benchmark, outperforming other large-scale models and demonstrating superior capabilities in tasks like natural language inference and reading comprehension.

Fujitsu has officially launched “Takane,” a cutting-edge large language model (LLM) specifically designed for enterprises, boasting the highest proficiency in the Japanese language worldwide. Developed in collaboration with the Canadian company Cohere, Takane is integrated into Fujitsu’s AI services and is accessible via its all-in-one platform, Fujitsu Data Intelligence PaaS (DI PaaS), effective from September 30, 2024.

The launch represents a significant advancement in generative AI technology tailored for secure private environments, making it particularly suited for sensitive sectors such as finance, healthcare, and government. Fujitsu highlights that Takane has achieved impressive results on the Japanese General Language Understanding Evaluation (JGLUE) benchmark, outperforming other large-scale models and demonstrating superior capabilities in tasks like natural language inference and reading comprehension.

Takane’s architecture is based on Cohere’s Command R+ model, which has been enhanced to better suit the unique linguistic characteristics of Japanese. This includes handling the complexities of multiple character types and nuanced expressions that are prevalent in the language. The model’s design allows for fine-tuning with proprietary company data, ensuring that it meets the specific needs of various industries.

Fujitsu’s strategy with Takane involves not just providing a language model but integrating it into a broader AI framework that combines knowledge graphs and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technology. This integration aims to facilitate compliance with industry regulations while enhancing the overall performance of business operations. The model’s capabilities are further complemented by an auditing technology that ensures outputs align with corporate standards.

Key industry players, including Mizuho Financial Group, Mitsubishi Electric, and Deloitte Tohmatsu Consulting, have already expressed interest in leveraging Takane for their operations. They anticipate that the model will streamline processes and significantly enhance system quality, particularly in areas where precise language use is critical.

Vivek Mahajan, CTO at Fujitsu, emphasized that Takane will enable companies operating in high-security environments to harness the potential of generative AI, thereby contributing to business transformation. This initiative aligns with Fujitsu’s commitment to driving innovation across its consulting and technological offerings.
